Today we entered a state that neither of us have ever been in; (no, not confusion… we’ve been there, I know that was corny. Oh well). We entered the beautiful state of Oregon, and we are excited about it! And yes, we entered in true north western USA style; in the rain… LOL!
The border of Idaho/Oregon is also the place where we cross over the Snake River (which we’ve been “dancing” with since Yellowstone NP) for the last time. It is here where the river heads north and later joins with the Columbia River for the rest of its journey to the ocean.
Mostly, today was about pedal to the metal type rolling down the HWY since we really want to see the coast. But… we will not pass up the opportunity to see something spectacular, and we did. About 100 miles west of Pocatello is Twin Falls, home of the Shoshone Falls (created by the Snake River:), and this site did not disappoint! The larger of the 2 falls was stunning. What is really interesting about these falls is that they are controlled by a dam. When irrigation is needed the falls can be literally dry, but right now with the snow melt, the rain, and no need to hold back the water the falls are at their best and are breath taking! The falls are known as the Niagara of the west and it was easy to see why.
We went through quite a bit of rain from about Boise, ID until about 120 miles east of Portland. Although it was still cloudy, passing through the Blue Mountains and then the Cascade Mountains (and every hill in between) was beautiful! We also traveled next to the Columbia River for about the last 2 hours and we are now crashing in Portland.
We covered a lot of miles today on our quest for the coast, it was Portland or bust! Luckily, Portland won.
Until tomorrow
