Day 11: Redwoods vs. Coyotes?

Hey… we covered some road today! We’re in Ukiah, CA for the night, ever heard of it? We hadn’t until today. About 10 miles north of this lovely city (surrounded by the Coastal Range), there were two exits right after one another. One exit read, “Redwoods Valley,” the other, “Coyote Valley.” Which did we take? Well, we didn’t take either. We stayed on the Redwood HWY, better known as Hwy 101 which we have been meandering down for 5 days now! And it’s hard to describe how sweet it has been.

Today we spent the day with the Redwoods… wow! Neither one of us has ever seen them so we are in awe… After Crescent City, the Redwood HWY begins and as I said we are still on it. We started out in the northern Redwoods State Park, a little later we took a long hike off of the Newton B Drury scenic parkway (a short spurt off of HWY 101). The hike was amazing! It took us up into the woods where we saw so many Redwoods, big, little, and ginormous (this is a real word now in the dictionary for anyone that doesn’t know). I can’t tell you how much we have enjoyed seeing them everywhere!

Another major highlight is that we finally saw a large group of wild elk! We have been keeping a lookout for days (since Yellowstone), watching in the woods on the sides of the roads and we even drove into the woods today on a road where you can spot elk, but didn’t see any. Then, later we saw this huge group right out in the open! They were standing and laying in the middle of a marshy area next to Big Lagoon just north of Eureka, CA. How ironic that we have looked so hard for them and then when we least suspected, there they were! It was great.

Until tomorrow
